Becoming an HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) driving instructor in the UK can offer a rewarding career path for individuals passionate about both driving and teaching. In this guide, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of becoming an HGV driving instructor, including associated costs, potential earnings, and the fulfilling aspects of this profession. Although formal training and registration aren't obligatory for instructing driving, you have the option to voluntarily register as an instructor. This involves applying to join either the national register of LGV instructors, which is endorsed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), or the national vocational driving instructors register. It's important to note that the sole prerequisite has always been holding the specific category on your driving license for a minimum of 3 years.
