C1 Theory Test: Everything You Need to Know

C1 Theory Test

Most people underestimate this bit. They think it’ll be like their car theory test, just a bit longer maybe. It isn’t. It’s genuinely a different beast, and I’ve seen decent drivers fail it because they walked in expecting an easier ride than they got.

Do you actually need to sit it though? Mostly yes. There’s one exception: if you passed your standard car test before 1 January 1997, you might already have C1 entitlement sitting there without ever taking a separate theory test. Lucky if that’s you. Everyone else, keep reading.

What's Actually in the C1 Theory Test?

Two parts. Multiple choice, then hazard perception. Pass both or you’re not moving forward, and no, doing brilliantly on one doesn’t carry you through the other. Doesn’t work like that.

The Multiple-Choice Section

100 questions. Vehicle weights, driver hours, braking systems, road signs, what to do when things go wrong, defects and maintenance, that sort of territory. You get 1 hour 55 minutes for it and you need 85 right to pass. There’s a 15-minute practice run beforehand too, so you’re not thrown in cold, which honestly is more generous than a lot of people expect.

The Hazard Perception Test

This is the one people get weirdly nervous about. Nineteen clips, twenty hazards hiding in them, and you click when you spot one developing. Score up to 5 points per hazard if you’re quick.

!

Watch out

Click too fast or in an obvious rhythm and the system clocks it as gaming the test, zero points for that clip. Pass mark is 67 out of 100. Some people over-click out of nerves and torch their own score without realising why.

Is the C1 Theory Test Just 50 Questions?

No. That’s the car theory test you’re thinking of. C1 is 100, double it. If you’ve already passed your standard theory test and you’re assuming this’ll feel familiar, it will and it won’t. Same format, way more content, and honestly the topics get more technical, tachographs and load security aren’t really things a car driver thinks about day to day.

What Happens If You Fail?

You only resit the bit you failed. Small mercy. But you do pay the fee again for that section, and there’s no cap on attempts, which sounds generous until you’re on your third resit and out of pocket each time.

i

Worth knowing

I’d rather people prepared properly the first time than treated it as a warm-up round, because it adds up.

How Can You Pass Your Theory Test Easily?

No trick here, sorry. But there are smarter ways to revise than reading a book front to back and hoping it sticks. Driver hours, vehicle defects, load security, these are where people genuinely lose marks, more than road signs which most people already half-know from driving anyway. Mix your methods too. Reading, watching clips, then doing a timed mock. Don’t just do one of those on repeat.

Where to Find C1 Theory Test Practice

Paid Resources

DVSA’s own theory test book is still the one I’d point people to first, it covers the full question bank properly rather than guessing at what might come up. Beyond that there’s a decent spread of apps and sites offering C1 theory test practice, mock papers, hazard clips, the lot.

Free Resources

Theory test practice free of charge genuinely exists, don’t let anyone tell you that you have to pay upfront.

DVSA's Official Free Materials

DVSA puts out free sample questions and hazard perception clips through their official channels. Start there. See where you’re actually weak before you spend money on an app that might just repeat what you already know.

Tip

Build a real study schedule rather than cramming the last week, sketch out the braking system diagrams because that stuff sticks better visually, and just pay attention to road signs when you’re a passenger, not even driving, just looking. Sounds obvious. Works anyway.

How Much Does the C1 Theory Test Cost?

Costs can vary slightly depending on where and how you book, but here’s a realistic guide for 2026.

Multiple choice

£25–£30

Booked and paid separately

Hazard perception

£10–£15

Booked and paid separately

Total, roughly

£35–£45

Unlike the car test, C1 fees are two separate bookings

i

Always double check

Always check the exact current price on the official GOV.UK booking page before you book, since fees do get reviewed from time to time.

Need to Change Your Test Date?

You can reschedule or cancel through the official GOV.UK booking service, but you need to do it at least three clear working days out. Miss that window and you lose the fee, full stop, no exceptions I’m aware of. If you know you’re not ready, move the date. Don’t sit it just because it’s booked.

Quick FAQs

How long does the whole thing take?

Multiple choice is 1 hour 55 minutes, hazard perception is about 20 minutes on top of that.

Can I do it online?

No. You have to go to an actual DVSA test centre. No shortcuts there.

How much does the C1 theory test cost in 2026?

Expect to pay somewhere around £35 to £45 in total, split across the multiple-choice section and the hazard perception section separately. Prices can shift slightly, so it’s worth checking the current fee on GOV.UK when you book rather than relying on any figure printed elsewhere, including this guide.

How long does a pass last?

Two years.

Do I need a medical first?

Yes, a DVLA D4 form, signed off by your doctor, before you can even apply for the licence.

Final Word

It’s not designed to trip you up unfairly, but it does punish people who wing it. Use the free stuff first, get comfortable with the hazard perception format before test day, and don’t coast on what you remember from your car theory test years ago because it won’t be enough here. Book it when you’re ready. Not before.
